What is Cancer of the Small Intestine?

Cancer of the small intestine occurs when cells mutate, no longer function properly in the small intestine, and grow out of control. Part of your digestive tract, the small intestine is a tube about 20 feet in length that your body relies on to absorb nutrients from liquids and food. Like some of the other cancers that attack the digestive tract, stomach cancers can interfere with your body’s ability to digest food properly.

What Are Signs and Symptoms of Cancer of the Small Intestine?

Signs and symptoms of cancer of the small intestine include:

  • Blood in the stool
  • A blockage in the small intestine, which can have the following issues:
    • Belly pain with cramping
    • Puffy or swollen-looking belly, also known as abdominal distension
    • Vomiting

How is Cancer of the Small Intestine Treated?

Cancer of the small intestine is treated primarily with surgery to remove the tumors. Your doctor may also prescribe chemotherapy and radiation treatments as well, but that will be dependent upon the specifics of your cancer.
